How To Setup Mobile Broadband Like BSNL 3G USB DataCard On Ubuntu 11.10



This procedure also works for the other mobile broadband providers like Reliance, Tata Photon, MTNL, MTS MBlaze, Aircel, Airtel, Spice, Vodafone etc.,

Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) has simplified the configuration of wireless and wired network connections with an easy to use network connection wizard. Though this article BSNL 3G USB Data Cardtalks about the procedure for BSNL data card, it can be used for any wireless data card. Mobile Broadband refers to any kind of high speed Internet connection which is provided by an external device such as a 3G USB stick or mobile phone with built-in HSDPA / UMTS / GPRS data connection. Some laptops have recently been produced with mobile broadband devices already inside them. Most mobile broadband devices should be recognized automatically when you connect them to your computer. Ubuntu will prompt you to configure the device.
The New Mobile Broadband Connection wizard will open automatically when you connect the new device.

Click Continue. In the next screen select your country where your Mobile Broadband device was issued.

Click Continue. In the next screen select your network provider.

Click Continue. In the next screen select your billing plan, this screen is to select your local network of your Internet Service Provider.

Review your entries and click on Apply.
In the next screen give your connection a name and click Save.

Your connection is now ready to use. To connect, click the network menu in the top panel and select your new connection.
To disconnect, click the network menu in the top panel and click Disconnect.

If you are not prompted to configure the device when you connect it, it may still be recognised by Ubuntu. In such cases you can add the connection manually.

  1. Click the network menu in the top panel and select Edit Connections…
  2. Swith to the Mobile Broadband tab. (Refer the above screenshot)
  3. Click Add.
  4. This should open the New Mobile Broadband Connection wizard. Enter your details as described above.

Make sure that usb modem switching is turned on.
that can be done with the following command. Remove the usb modem hit the below command in terminal as root else add sudo to run the command as normal user and plug the modem back into usb.
